Urban Shield has grown into a comprehensive, full-scale regional preparedness exercise.

EOD

EOD teams participating in Urban Shield will be tasked with new challenges and participate in new locations throughout the region.   This year the event will focus on reinforcing best practices and response protocol while incorporating new tools and showcasing locations throughout the Bay Area.

The exercise builds on the EOD programs from years past at which teams were tasked with multiple, separate scenarios that introduced WMD response protocols as part of the training.  Teams were faced with tasks that tested multiple skills sets including robot operation, render safe procedures, IED recognition, dismounted unit techniques, as well as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) selection and hand entry techniques.

Training events take place during daylight hours. Teams arrive at the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal Facility on a staggered schedule and will complete a total of four scenarios with limited tools available to simulate disaster response situations.

Teams will be introduced to new Render Safe Tools and have the opportunity to test them on devices in a realistic environment.  Additionally, teams will be introduced to emerging robotics technology provided by iRobot, new, light-weight response suits provided by Med-Eng and revolutionary hand entry tools provided by Title sponsor Tactical Electronics.

During the scenarios, teams will be tasked with investigating chemical and radiological Dispersal Devices, prosecuting complex electronic firing systems and working in challenging new environments such as aboard aircraft and large vessels.
